Hans Lewy, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley was born in Breslau, Germany and came to Berkeley as a lecturer in 1935. He became a full professor in 1946. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Academia Nazionale dei Lincei (Rome).
